Frequently Asked Questions
FOR BEGINNERS
What Should I Know for My First Class?
To ensure a smooth start, please arrive at least 15 minutes before your first class begins. This will give you ample time to familiarise yourself with the studio and meet your teacher. We provide yoga mats, props, and access to filtered water, so all you need to bring is a towel, a water bottle, and a sense of curiosity and openness. During classes, we kindly request that you refrain from using mobile phones to maintain a respectful environment for all participants.
Which Class Is Suitable for Beginners?
- If you’re new to yoga, we recommend beginning with our Smooth Flow or Restorative classes. These classes move at a slower pace and focus on the fundamentals of alignment in the body for safety. They also emphasise mindful breath awareness.
- Once you feel ready for a more challenging experience, you are welcome to join our dynamic Sol Flow classes.
- It’s important to know that you can always adapt poses to your comfort level, and we encourage you to take breaks as needed during any class.
I’ve Never Done Yoga Before. Can I Join a Group Class or Should I Opt for a Private Session First?
Most new students can comfortably attend our Smooth Flow or Restorative classes. These classes allow you to modify poses to suit your current abilities and comfort level. Yoga is inclusive, and flexibility or strength is not a prerequisite. Everyone can benefit from yoga. If you are pregnant, dealing with chronic pain, or recovering from an injury, consider scheduling a one-on-one session to assess your needs. Please communicate any injuries or concerns with your teacher, and note that we may, in certain cases, recommend specific class types for safety reasons.
What Should I Wear to Class?
Our yoga classes involve various movements and stretches, so choose clothing that allows you to feel comfortable and move freely. For dynamic classes where you may sweat, opt for breathable and moisture-wicking attire. For Restorative yoga, where poses are held for longer durations, select comfortable attire that facilitates ease of movement.
What Facilities Do You Provide?
To enhance your practice, we offer studio yoga mats, blocks, and bolsters. A filtered water tap is available for your convenience, but you are also welcome to bring your own props and accessories to enhance your experience.
ETHICAL VIRTUES
Everything we do at Sol Moves is rooted in our primary core values of compassion, connection, integrity, respect, kindness, dedication, inclusion and exploration.
These ethical virtues are practiced by students and teachers alike.
Students
We ask students to, first and foremost, honour yourselves.
To love and accept where you are at in your yoga journey.
To explore your outer edges with gentle kindness, without the need to push yourself beyond your limitations, but enough to experience personal expansion and evolution.
We encourage curiosity, self-enquiry, self-kindness and dedication to your practice.
Teachers
Teachers at Sol Moves are committed to be and do their best, in the service to others.
They are dedicated to their personal and professional growth and to work within their scope of practice.
Teachers act with integrity and responsibility, respecting the vulnerability of the student-teacher relationship, avoiding any, and all, inappropriate misconduct, as well as protecting the privacy and confidentiality of all students.
Above all, teachers meet each student with kindness, respect, compassion and heart-felt dedication to support them along their yogic path.
STUDIO ETIQUETTE
To enhance yours, and the experience of others, we ask students and teachers to comply with our studio etiquette;
1. Pre-booking your class is not essential but encouraged to ensure your spot.
2. All classes begin and end on time, out of respect for the practice itself and other students. Ensure you arrive with plenty of time to settle on to your yoga mat. The studio door is locked at the commencement of a class and latecomers will not be permitted into class.
3. New students are to arrive no less than 10mins prior to class, to register and have a studio induction.
4. Inform your teacher of any injuries or current health issues prior to the commencement of the class.
5. The use of mobile phones is not permitted in the studio. Please turn them off prior to entering.
6. Remove your shoes prior to entering the yoga space and place them in the shelving provided.
7. Leave bags and other personal belongings in the storage space provided and do not bring them into the yoga space. These can be a distraction and a hazard for teachers and other students.
8. We encourage the use of your own yoga props – mat, blocks, bolsters, straps. If you have borrowed props from the studio, wipe them down and put them away as you found them.
9. At times, teachers may provide hands-on adjustments during class. If you prefer not to have physical contact with the teacher, kindly position one of the provided Wooden Sol Moves discs above your mat to signal your preference.
10. The yoga space is a sacred space. Once you arrive at your mat, refrain from unnecessary talking. Practice silence before, during and after practice.
11. Refrain from comparison and competition with others. Embrace your own personal yogic journey.
12. We do not tolerate racism, discrimination, harassment or hate. We ask that everyone in our community embody and uphold our values of kindness, compassion, respect and inclusion.
13. Don’t skip Savasana. The final resting pose in yoga, is lying flat on your back in restorative stillness. A time to quieten the mind and allow your body to soak in the benefits of your yoga practice. It is also a deeply sacred time for many students.
14. Dedicate yourself to your practice. Keep returning to your mat. The journey is worth it! Be open and curious to the vast transformation and soulful expansion that is possible from your yoga practice.
